Counseling and Psychotherapy are terms that are often interchangeable. Both are considered talk therapy, and apply scientifically validated procedures that help you talk through your thoughts and feelings. Both counseling and psychotherapy help you cope with challenging circumstances in more adaptive ways. At Twelve-Two Christian Counseling, we engage in both counseling and psychotherapy, however, we generally refer to both methods as “counseling.”
Counseling is a collaborative treatment approach that provides an empathetic, nonjudgmental environment, allowing you to speak freely. Because counseling sometimes involves intense emotional discussions, you may find yourself angry, crying or even exhausted after a session. However, discussing your concerns over time will change the way you think and feel and will improve your ability to cope with the problems you face. In fact, scientific research has identified positive changes in the brain as a result of counseling.
